Top 10 Prospects: #6 Gustav Olofsson

Gustav Olofsson
Defenseman
Shoots: Left
Height: 6'4". Weight: 191 lbs
Born: December 1, 1994
2013-14 Team: Colorado College (NCHC), Iowa Wild (AHL)
Acquired: 2nd round pick (46th overall) in 2013 NHL Entry Draft
Previous Rank: 10

When the Wild drafted Gustav Olofsson, he was relatively unknown among Wild fans. But after a season with Colorado College and the Iowa Wild, he is now very well known.

After just one season with CC the Wild signed Olofsson to his entry level contract, which allowed him to play the final eight games of the Iowa season.  At CC, Olofsson posted eight points in 30 games before and then went on to score one goal in his eight games in Iowa.

Much like the #7 player on our prospects list (Christian Folin), Olofsson is an extremely talented two-way defenseman. He can move the puck well, is known to use the body, and can provide an occasional spark on the offensive end, just as long as that chance does not come with much risk to giving up a chance at the other end (meaning: he is very responsible defensively).

To begin the season, Olofsson will be in Iowa as a top pairing candidate. With the Minnesota club still having uncertainty on the back end of their defensive core, it is possible we could see Olofsson in St. Paul this year. But with players like Matt Dumba and Folin more NHL ready to open the year, Olofsson is more likely to play out the year in Iowa.
