A New Face In The State Of Hockey: Guillaume Gelinas

Guillaume Gelinas

5'10"
185 lbs
Shoots: Left
Born: June 14, 1993
Birthplace: Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
Acquired: Signed a three year entry level contract on July 1, 2014

Yesterday behind their more high profile signings, the Wild also announced that they have signed defenseman Guillaume Gelinas to a three year entry level contract. Gelinas has spent the past five seasons playing the Val d'Or in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Before this past season Gelinas had not eclipsed 45 points in a season. But this past season Gelinas found a second, third, and fourth gear. He scored 23 goals and added 69 assists from the blueline. He was the winner of the Emile Bouchard Trophy, as the best defenseman in the QMJHL (previous winners include Ray Bourque, Eric Desjardins, Keith Yandle, and Kris Letang). Now that he is under contract Gelinas will be playing for the Iowa Wild in 2014-15.

Gelinas has shown good offensive abilities and has grown considerably in that department. He was a way to go defensively and is decent on his feet. Whether he can translate his growth over to the AHL remains to be seen.

This is a low risk, high reward situation for the Wild. He continues to progress, and we end up seeing him with the Wild someday or he could just end up being a guy who holds down a roster spot in Iowa for the next three years. It will be something to keep an eye on in Iowa moving forward.
