After trading back one spot (79th to 80th), Minnesota's first pick of the morning was defenseman Louis Belpedio from the United States Development Team.

Belpedio, much like Minnesota's first round pick Alex Tuch, has spent the past two seasons with the USNTDP, and also served as team captain for the Team USA U 18 team at the World Junior Championships. In seven games in the WJC, Belpedio scored two assists.

Taking a look at Belpedio, he is a very solid two way defenseman. He has good offensive instincts and tends to shoot the puck more often than none. He is a good skater and has decent awareness at all times on the ice. He might not strike you as physical, given his size at 5'10", but he is very strong and will use his body to force opposing players off the puck.

This fall, Belpedio is set to play for Miami University (Ohio). He will more than likely play at least two seasons there before coming over to the Minnesota/Iowa system.

Welcome to the Team of 18,001 Louis Belpedio!
